瀝青由不同分子量的碳?xì)浠衔锛捌浞墙饘傺苌锝M成，常溫下為黑色或黑褐色的粘稠液體或固體，在瀝青混合料中主要起膠結(jié)作用。通常情況下，普通瀝青混合料為黑色，改性瀝青呈黑亮光澤。表面泛紅主要表現(xiàn)在膠輪碾壓后，粗集料棱角、細(xì)集料的顆粒表面瀝青膜剝落、發(fā)泛紅現(xiàn)象。
